Week 15 NFL Power Rankings

9 December 2008

I know I'm excited for the week 15 NFL power rankings, as there seems to be some shake ups on the horizon! The New York Giants lost a tough game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens both scored a W against NFC East opponents and the NFC South saw all of their teams face off against each other. So how does that leave the power rankings for week 15? Let's not waste any more time.

Week 15 NFL Power Rankings

  1. Pittsburgh Steelers - 10-3 - I thought the Dallas Cowboys would be able to get the win on Sunday, and it looked as if they were going to until the last few minutes. But what matters is that the Steelers found a way to win the game. The team has done that all season, even when dealing with an oppressive load of injuries. The defense is really kicking into high gear and the Steelers looked primed for a deep postseason run.
  2. Tennessee Titans - 12-1 - The Titans officially locked up their division and with another win will just about have home field for the entire AFC playoffs locked up. Once the Titans lost their first game they seemed to have fallen off the national radar, as if everyone said, OK they lost, it was all a fluke. But there is nothing fluky about this team. The running attack is still firing on all cylinders and the defense still punishes the other team.
  3. New York Giants - 11-2 - The Giants shouldn't be penalized too heavily for losing to the Eagles. The Eagles struggled in the middle of this season but are still a talented and well coached bunch. And every team in the NFC East claws and fights in every divisional game. With the Plaxico Burress fiasco still very much alive, the Giants couldn't get it together. A tough schedule remains, with all of their remaining games against playoff caliber opposition. Brandon Jacobs needs to get healthy, and in a hurry.
  4. Baltimore Ravens - 9-4 - The Ravens did what I expected them to do and take care of business against the Washington Redskins. Next week they play a huge game against the Steelers which could potentially be for the division crown. As it stands right now, the Ravens are the in the playoffs either way, but that could change very quickly in the deep AFC. Imagine how intense and hard hitting the playoff games would be involving this trifecta: Steelers-Ravens-Titans.
  5. Carolina Panthers - 10-3 - The Panthers took care of business against the Buccaneers just as I predicted they would. The teams were on slightly different paths, and the Panthers are on the rise right now. They need to get somethings answered before playoff time, namely a consistent passing attack, but they have the star caliber to make some noise either way.
  6. Indianapolis Colts - 9-4 - Don't look now but if the playoffs started today, the Indianapolis Colts would be in them! What a turnaround they have made, coming all the way back from a miserable, sub .500 start. They can't let their feet off the gas pedal yet though, as losing one game would toss them right back into the mix with the plentiful group of 8-5 AFC East teams.
  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 9-4 - I think the loss to the Panthers will ultimately help the team out a little bit. The Buccaneers were clearly surviving against some teams they should have been dominating, and the loss should fire them up to try to win the division or at least secure a playoff spot in the last several weeks.
  8. New England Patriots - 8-5 - I don't care what anybody says, you don't want to see the Patriots as a Wild Card team in the first round of the AFC playoffs. Too well coached and too many veterans with big game experience to be a "safe" team to face. Of course, they aren't in the playoffs right now, so they have some work to do.
  9. Arizona Cardinals - 8-5 - The Arizona Cardinals have won their division! Let me just say that again, the Arizona Cardinals have won their division! That's crazy, it's unheard of, it's a miracle! This team is about offensive explosion, and Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin can really light up the scoreboard. You must be able to do so as well to be able to take them out.
  10. Atlanta Falcons - 8-5 - The Falcons disappointed me a bit in losing to the Saints. It wasn't surprising necessarily, all season long the NFC South teams have won their home games against each other. I thought the Falcons though were establishing themselves on a higher rung. I was wrong, at least for now.

Teams I ran out of space for: Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys

BCS Championship Game: Florida vs. Oklahoma sounds just fine, but how much better would college football be if it was the winner of Florida vs. Oklahoma against the winner of Texas vs. USC for the national championship?

Well, there are the power rankings for week 15 2008. Do you agree or disagree with them? Then let me know in the comments and we can debate it out. Here's looking forward to another great weekend of football, and the NFL power rankings for next week...it's December now, the playoffs are close!
