Mike Singeltary: My Hero?

1 November 2008

Mike Singeltary, new coach for the time being of the San Francisco 49ers and of course all-time NFL defensive great, might be my new hero. Now let me start by saying I love a good coach freak out. From Jim Mora's "Playoffs?!" to Dennis Green's "If you want to crown them, then crown them!", nothing sets my mind at ease like a coach losing his mind in front of dozens of people ready to catch every sweet second of it.

So when Mike Singeltary decided his first game ever as an NFL head coach was a good time to lose complete control and make a statement, I thought it was a brilliant move. He throws underachieving Vernon Davis out to the locker room in the middle of the game. Then he bashes him to the press and tells the whole world he needs winners, he'll play with ten players, he doesn't care. Bad ass, and I'm loving it.

But of course the Mike Singeltary press conference was only part of the story. Later, the news came out that during halftime of the game, Singeltary actually mooned his team to try to make a point. This grown man, a fearsome NFL defensive great, a football legend and icon, a head coach of a storied NFL franchise, pulled down his pants and showed his behind for all of his team and the rest of his staff to see.

And it still gets better! Then, instead of picking up his pants and going up his business as normal (and who among us hasn't had to do that before?) he opts to leave his pants down for several minutes. So, picture yourself in the locker room of the San Francisco 49ers. Your new head coach, an NFL legend is trying to fire you up because you aren't playing well. And there he is, pants down, sending a direct message of if this is the best ya got, then you can suck this!

Welcome to the head coaching ranks in the NFL, Mike Singeltary. I hope you make it a little while, because I'm sure this won't be the last gem you bestow upon us.
