What does the Tony Romo Injury Mean for the Dallas Cowboys
The news that Tony Romo will be sidelined for at least three games certainly didn't cheer up any Dallas Cowboys fans after the crazy loss they endured against the Arizona Cardinals. However, I think that Romo being hurt is not only not their biggest concern, but it could serve to improve the team for the rest of the 2008 NFL season and beyond.
Of a bigger concern to Dallas Cowboys fans should be their depleted secondary. With Terrance Newman out, and Adam Jones ready to be suspended once again, the secondary is missing their two best cover guys. Lucky for them though, neither the St. Louis Rams nor the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should be able to exploit that too badly, as long as DeMarcus Ware continues causing havoc.
In the long run though, the Tony Romo injury may actually help the Dallas Cowboys. The team has clearly been falling short of their lofty 2008 expectations, and they need to get back on track. That means you don't throw the ball to Terrell Owens 20 times a game, especially when he only grabs 5 of them. That means when you have Felix Jones on your roster, you make sure he touches the ball early and often. Felix Jones is a touchdown and highlight reel waiting to happen, and Marion Barber is one of the best backs in the NFL right now.
With Tony Romo out and Brad Johnson stepping in, the play callers down in Big D will have to get their act together and stop relying on the pass and Terrell Owens. Expect to see 20-25 touches for Marion Barber and another 10-15 for Felix Jones. At least that's what I would do. Brad Johnson will come in, hand the ball off, make a few big plays and none of the bad ones that accompany a Tony Romo pass happy attack, and the Cowboys will get a few wins before the big Giants game in November.
By the time Tony Romo returns from his injury, the Cowboys should have discovered their true identity, a team with a lethal and explosive running attack spearheaded by Marion Barber and Felix Jones.
