Warren Sapp Speaks on Al Davis and the Raiders
Warren Sapp has been interviewed by the Inside the NFL team, and spoke freely about his time with the Oakland Raiders and his views of Al Davis. All of this after Lane Kiffin was finally fired by Al Davis earlier in the week, ending the completely suspense-free saga. We all knew this was going to happen, it was just a matter of time really. Davis is apparently trying to set a world record for the most coaches in the least amount of time.
Yes, Kiffin had an awful record in his year plus on the job, but he also had an awful team to work with. How can he be judged on just over one season of NFL games, when he's had a number one draft pick who hasn't played, a miserable offense and little that could lead to immediate success.
I don't think anybody can really interpret everything that went on behind the scenes here, but even if Kiffin was not as he billed himself, it seems he got the short end of the stick on this one.
Sapp commented that Kiffin was really trying to turn things around in Oakland, but was met by the unbreakable Al Davis regime (consisting of only one key member, Al Davis) who is stuck somewhere in the 60's or 70's, imagining John Madden is strolling the sidelines. Davis phones in plays, changes the game plan, picks the players and has the last say on everything, which completely undermines the authority and ability of a coach.
Bottom line in Oakland is that yet another coach has been axed, the team has no hopes for revitalization and Al Davis apparently will never die, let alone cede control of the Raiders.
