Power Rankings Week 9

28 October 2008

Welcome to another addition of the weekly NFL power rankings, brought to you by Discount Football Merchandise. This weekend was really what the NFL is all about. Great games, mixed in with some upsets and surprises and some close finishes. I'm pretty torn about who my number 1 spot is going to belong to this week in the power rankings, the Giants or the Titans.

I talked about whether the Giants won or the Steelers lost yesterday, and I concluded that the Steelers threw the game away, but of course the Giants still deserved credit. The Tennessee Titans on the other hand are coming off a great win last night over the Colts. So how will the week 9 power rankings shake out? Let's take a look.

Week 9 NFL Power Rankings

  1. Tennessee Titans - 7-0 - I guess it boils down to this, the Titans had the top spot in my power rankings last week, and they didn't lose, so they still deserve number 1. Not only that, but they put on a great performance against a division rival led by Peyton Manning and they came back from a deficit at one point.
  2. New York Giants - 6-1 - What can you say about that game on Sunday? Great game, even if it was somewhat sloppy by both teams. The Giants went into Pittsburgh and got a real tough W in a game they easily could have lost. The schedule doesn't get any easier though, and the NFC East is extremely tightly packed and competitive.
  3. Pittsburgh Steelers - 5-2 - The Pittsburgh defense provided goal line stands, turnovers and held the Giants to field goals. But the offense had Big Ben running all day and throwing four picks. Bad performance, but still almost got a win over the best team in the NFC. Gotta love Mewelde Moore and how he's playing, let's see if the Steelers can help keep Roethlisberger standing on his feet a bit more.
  4. New England Patriots - 5-2 - So much for a changing of the guard. The Patriots have really rallied over the last few weeks, particularly after their bye week. Now they are tied for the division lead, have more momentum and they certainly have the experience to know how to close the show in the second half of a season. Really excited for the 2 Bills/Patriots games still on the schedule.
  5. Carolina Panthers - 6-2 - This is the Panthers team that I have been expecting all season. After some up and down weeks it looks like they are really settling into their true personality and playing the level of football that is expected of them. If they can keep this up, they are one of the favorites to leave the NFC.
  6. Washington Redskins - 6-2 - The Redskins certainly don't like to do things the easy way. A loss to the then winless Rams, narrowly escaping the Browns, and edging out the Lions this weekend. But Clinton Portis is playing out of his mind right now, the defense is turnover happy and the offense hangs onto the ball like they're protecting a family member. 6-2 at the half way mark, who would have thought it?
  7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 5-3 - Close game and a tough loss to the Dallas Cowboys. They had some calls go against them, and the Dallas crowd was really fired up. I think the bottom line is that the Cowboys needed that game much more, and the Buccaneers just wanted to win it. But the Buccaneers aren't going anywhere.
  8. Buffalo Bills - 5-2 - Big let down game for the Bills in Miami this weekend. It also shows how different the AFC East is than we all thought it would be. The Patriots have managed to stay on top, but the Jets are floundering in the cellar of the division while the Bills and the Dolphins are both having resurgent years. Love that defense, and need Trent Edwards to play smart.
  9. Philadelphia Eagles - 4-3 - The NFC East is so stacked it's insane. Three teams might come out of that division to go into the playoffs, just like last year. Only this year, three might not even do the division any justice! The Eagles won a game I expected them to against a young Falcons squad. But taking care of business at home against a potential playoff team in the Falcons is what you're supposed to do.
  10. Chicago Bears - 4-3 - I'm a bit nervous after that Vikings game the other week and the 200 or so points they gave up in it. But what's the motto of the day? A win is a win. If Kyle Orton plays within himself and the Bears defense buckles down, and even continues scoring from time to time, the Bears can come out of the NFC North under the radar.

Well, an AFC team has the number one spot, but there are 6 NFC teams in the top 10 week 9 power rankings this week, to just four in the AFC. This season is only going to get better and better!
